Muda: DAP's port chairperson proposal against govt 'mantra'

DAP’s proposal to appoint a caretaker state executive council member as the next Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairperson is against the government’s credibility, accountability and transparency ‘mantra’, said Penang Muda.

The party said that DAP’s suggestion to appoint Yeoh Soon Hin (above) implied that he was being compensated for being dropped from the upcoming state election.

“We find this to be deeply unreasonable… One of the key factors to Penang’s prosperity and economic growth is trade, thus highlighting the importance of PPC's role alongside the powers it yields.

“With this in mind, any appointment regarding the chair of this commission should be based on merit and not as a means to resolve an internal political dispute,” the party said in a statement today.

Penang Muda also questioned how DAP will justify the appointment should it win in the state polls.

Yesterday, during DAP’s announcement of its candidates for the Penang state polls, the party dropped eight incumbents.

Aside from Yeoh, other notable incumbents dropped in the shake-up were deputy chief minister II P Ramasamy, DAP Women’s chief Chong Eng, and state executive council members Phee Boon Poh and Soon Lip Chee.

After Loke offered to propose Yeoh as the next PPC chairperson, the transport minister also said that the latter will be suggested as a parliamentary candidate when the next general election comes around.

Meanwhile, Penang Muda lamented that the government was still abiding by dated practices.

“It seems we are still stuck with the same outdated culture of treating public office as a political bargaining chip.

“It's about time we opted for a change,” the party said. - Mkini
