PETALING JAYA: Muda has unveiled its first batch of candidates for the upcoming Aug 12 state elections.

It named four candidates, including three women, who would be contesting in Selangor.

They are Muda secretary-general Amir Hadi (Seri Serdang), Syaidiyah Izzati Nur Razak Maideen (Batu Tiga), R Thanusha (Sentosa) and Melanie Ting (Bukit Antarabangsa).

Batu Tiga, Sentosa and Bukit Antarabangsa were held by PKR up until the state assembly’s dissolution, while Seri Serdang was held by Amanah.

Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman urged voters to give these fresh faces a chance to prove themselves and serve, adding that they all came from professional backgrounds.

“Muda is also committed to having women make up 50% of our candidates for the state polls so they can represent women in the state assemblies,” he said at a press conference here.

The Muar MP also said the party would be unveiling its next two batches of candidates by the end of next week.

Muda deputy president Amira Aisya acknowledged that the three women candidates unveiled today did not have vast experience in politics, but she said they have what it takes to serve constituents well.

“Personally, when I was nominated for Puteri Wangsa (in the Johor state polls), I also had zero experience in politics. In politics, people say experience is important but I believe idealism, values and passion are equally important, and these women have them,” she said.

Earlier this month, Syed Saddiq said Muda was targeting to contest fewer than 10% of the seats up for grabs in the state elections.

The Aug 12 polls in six states will be Muda’s first time going solo in an election. In the Johor polls and 15th general election, it had agreed on an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan. - FMT
