Pejuang to sit out of six state elections - Mukhriz

Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) today said it will be sitting out of the upcoming six state elections.

Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir said the party will instead focus efforts to strengthen its position for another attempt in the 16th general elections.

Berita Harian quoted Mukhriz as saying that the decision made by his party's exco members last week was despite his father, Dr Mahathir Mohamad's efforts for PN to make way for Pejuang in certain seats.

"It is better for us to focus on strengthening the party and remain principled in our struggle," Mukhriz reportedly said at a press conference after a function with Pejuang state leaders in Kuala Lumpur today.

Mukhriz and Mahathir failed to defend their Jerlun and Langkawi parliament seats in GE15 on a Pejuang ticket and lost their deposits.

Pejuang in total fielded 125 candidates and none of them managed to win a seat.

Mukhriz said Pejuang has also informed Mahathir, who founded the party, of its decision not to contest the upcoming polls.

"Taking a step back does not mean permanently in reverse. We will continue to uphold the party's struggle.

"We agree with Dr Mahathir's statement that Malay votes should not be split," said the former Kedah menteri besar.

Mukhriz added that Pejuang will also not accept any last-minute "offers" for the party to contest in any seat.

At the same time, he said Pejuang will not stop its machinery from supporting candidates of another party so long as it’s done in their individual capacity. - Mkini
