PM urges Kelantan folk to 'wake up and demand change'

The people of Kelantan need to rise and make changes to enable the state to continue to develop and progress, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

He pointed out that the Kelantan government was unable to develop the state without the help of the federal government.

"Ultimately the people will decide. The people have to wake up and demand this change.

"The Kelantan government cannot afford it, there has to be support from the federal government. I’m telling you the truth, this is not an arrogant statement.

“The same goes for Perlis, if we don't help provide allocations, they won't be able to pay salaries," he said in his speech at the Sentuhan Kasih Desa programme in Gua Musang today.

Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Therefore, Anwar said close cooperation between the federal government and the state governments was very important to solve the people’s various problems.

The prime minister also affirmed the commitment of the unity government to cooperate with any party in efforts to develop the states, including Kelantan.

"A few months ago, I met with (former finance minister) Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah to discuss the restoration of the country's economy... he (Tengku Razaleigh) cooperated well," Anwar said.

Anwar also denied claims that the administration of the unity government was under DAP’s thumb.

"All this while, DAP has never objected to projects for entrepreneurs, villagers and multi-billion ringgit programmes for Malays,” he added.

‘Give us a chance for one term’

Meanwhile, Zahid urged the people of Kelantan to give the unity government parties a chance to win in the state for a change.

The BN chairperson said the Kelantanese need to make a change as the state has been under the same government for the past 33 years.

“Pity the people of this state. Try to give just one term, only five years (to the unity government parties). If we do the same thing or not right (no development), then change back (the state government).

“But this time try to give your support to us. InsyaAllah, we will do our best.

“To parents, tell your children who will be returning (to vote) and those already staying in this state, enough for now because 33 years (of administration) is too long,” he said at a gathering with the Kelantan Government Retirees Association in Gua Musang today.

Zahid added that although the unity government is not perfect, it will rectify all mistakes for the benefit of the Kelantan people.
