The prime minister’s claims that he saved Umno from being banned is merely a “fabricated story” made ahead of the state polls, said former Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa.
His comments came after Anwar Ibrahim accused former premiers Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin Yassin of plotting to deregister Umno post the 14th general election.
Annuar (above, left) - who is now a PAS member - denied it and said that he had personally checked the claims with both Mahathir and Muhyiddin.
“We know that if Umno was to be deregistered, it could have been done a long time ago.
“This is because Umno had breached ROS’ (Registrar of Societies) rules many times, between 2012 and 2017 especially involving Form 9 but the latter didn’t take action.
“And it is proven that it was Muhyiddin who brought Umno (back) into the government, instead of banning it. And he even handed power over to Ismail Sabri Yaakob to become prime minister.
“So in my opinion, Anwar’s story of ‘saving Umno from getting banned’ has not only been denied by Muhyiddin and Mahathir, but is a fabrication - like using Ajinamoto to ‘spice up’ the narrative ahead of the state polls in August,” Annuar said in a Facebook post today.
On July 16, Anwar stated that BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi became the target of attacks from Perikatan Nasional (PN) because he learnt about the plot masterminded by Muhyiddin and Mahathir.
While he had opposed Umno at that point in time, Anwar said he did not want the party to get banned.
“Umno has its own history, its own national struggle. It is my parents’ party. I have different opinions, but banning it is not a solution.
“We cannot erase history, why ban it?” Anwar was reported as asking during the Harapan-BN election machinery launch in Kedah on Saturday.
Yesterday, Zahid lashed out at Annuar claiming that the letter did not know about Umno’s affairs despite previously being the party’s secretary-general, adding that Annuar’s heart was never with the party.
He added that Annuar had a tendency to be friendly with the “other side” referring to PN.
Meanwhile, Annuar questioned why Zahid did not support efforts to appoint Anwar as prime minister post-Sheraton Move if the Pakatan Harapan chairperson had truly “saved” Umno in the past.
“Why didn’t Zahid support Anwar to become prime minister when the Sheraton Move happened? On the other hand… (Zahid) supported Tun M and then Muhyiddin to become PM.
