Ronnie Liu to stay in politics, non-partisan style

Ronnie Liu, who announced his departure from the party after 41 years, said he is not not calling time on politics.

PETALING JAYA: After being a DAP member for 41 years and serving as an elected representative for two terms, Ronnie Liu says he no longer wants to take part in partisan politics.

The former DAP central executive committee member said he preferred to be a non-partisan politician, but reiterated that he is not calling time on his involvement in politics.

“I am no more a partisan politician, but I will still engage in politics at a different level where I will not belong to a party platform,” he said in an interview with FMT.

Liu said he still intends to speak up on social injustice, corruption, economic issues and political developments in the country.

“One privilege of being a nonpartisan politician is that I can freely speak on different issues without worrying about stepping on somebody’s toes,” the former Sungai Pelek assemblyman said.

Last month, Liu announced that he was quitting DAP after “many incidents that went beyond my expectations”.

He had been known as a maverick in DAP, questioning the party’s decision last year to amend its constitution so that elected representatives who do not toe the party line on “fundamental issues” would automatically lose their membership.

Liu reaffirmed his support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the unity government while urging Malaysians and the opposition to give Putrajaya the space and time to deliver on its pledges.

“We all must give him time; he is not a magician or a trick master. He needs time,” said Liu, commenting on recent criticism that there had not been any meaningful progress since Anwar took office in November.

“You don’t expect the economy to flourish immediately after the disastrous years under the movement control order,” he said, referring to Covid-19 lockdowns of 2020 to 2022.

Liu also said it was nonsensical to expect foreign investors to return to Malaysia in droves when opposition politicians keep making racially-divisive sentiments. - FMT
