Sanusi gets hero's welcome, thousands throng Alor Setar airport

Thousands gathered at the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport Arrival Hall in Alor Setar, Kedah this evening in solidarity with caretaker menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

The supporters welcomed Sanusi’s arrival from Kuala Lumpur after he faced two charges at the Selayang Sessions Court this morning.

Videos posted to social media showed his supporters chanting ‘Allahuakbar’ upon the Jeneri assemblyperson’s arrival around 4.30pm today.

Berita Harian reported that supporters had been gathering from as early as 3pm.

Also present were the Kedah Health exco Hayati Othman, Information exco Wan Romani Wan Salim and Kedah PAS Commissioner Ahmad Yahaya.

The portal reported that Sanusi and his wife briefly interacted with supporters before leaving for his residence in Seri Mentaloon.

His two charges accused him of uttering words that had the tendency to incite disloyalty against a ruler.

The first charge was over Sanusi’s remarks that the Kedah sultanate was the only one in the country with uninterrupted lineage and that the Kedah ruler would not have appointed Amirudin Shari as menteri besar to head the state’s administration.

The second charge, Sanusi questioned if the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had indeed decreed that a unity government be formed after the parliamentary election last November.

The alleged offence was committed at around 11pm in Taman Selayang Mutiara, Selangor. The charge was framed under Section 4(1)(a) which criminalises acts of “seditious tendency”.

If found guilty, Sanusi can be jailed for up to three years, fined up to RM5,000, or both for each offence.

Both cases are set for pre-trial proceedings on Oct 4. - Mkini
