A PKR Youth leader has slammed speculation that the party’s deputy secretary-general Muhammad Zakwan Mustafa Kamal would be a potential candidate to replace his father Mustafa Kamal Ahmad as the Telok Ayer Tawar assemblyperson.
The party's Tasek Gelugor deputy youth chief Muhammad Qusyairi Johari pointed out that discussions on possible candidates were still ongoing.
"I do not agree with the concept of inheriting (seats) or dynasties, especially when the son who is set to succeed his father does not have the qualification or credibility of serving the area and its people.
"Any parliamentary or state seat belongs to the people. If the party wants to field a new face, the candidate must be well-liked by the grassroots and the voters," Qusyairi said in a statement today.
He was responding to a Malaysiakini report earlier today that Zakwan (above), who is a press secretary to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, is rumoured to be the preferred candidate for the Telok Ayer Tawar seat in the upcoming Penang state election.
Mustafa Kamal won the state seat in the 14th general election after defeating BN candidate Zamri Che Ros, Mohamad Hanif Haron (PAS), and Lee Thian Hong from Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM), with 2,203 majority votes.
Many options
Elaborating, Qusyairi said a candidate should be active in the seat he or she is contesting and friendly to the constituents and grassroots.
He further noted that Zakwan had lost in the party’s election last year for the youth chief position.
“If an assemblyperson is retiring from politics due to age, there are many candidate options that the party leadership can consider.
“I have confidence in the wisdom of the state and central leadership to make appropriate decisions for potential candidates in the state seat, so it is not appropriate for us to make initial assumptions about potential candidates.
“We at the grassroots always believe that the leadership will ensure the selection of the best candidate for the state elections this time,” he added.
