Umno to contest 12 seats in Selangor, party leader says

Umno will contest 12 seats in Selangor during the upcoming state election.

This is according to Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan during a town hall session organised by the Kota Raja Umno division last night.

Speaking as a panellist, the deputy finance minister delivered a pep talk to Umno members in Selangor on working together with Pakatan Harapan to make sure they win in the state polls.

“We (Umno) have lost Selangor since 2008. Even when we won the national polls, we still lost in Selangor. This has been the case until the 2018 general election.

“Now, we are going into the state election. If we do not want to give our votes to our allies, to the other parties within the unity government that are contesting seats where Umno and BN are not, then what will happen at the 12 seats where we need their support?

“So, we need to think about this from the bigger context, which is for the whole of Selangor,” he said, referring to BN’s partner Pakatan Harapan.

He told party members this would be the chance for Umno to again be part of the Selangor state government after they lost the state in the 12th general election.

‘We need the support of the Chinese’

Ahmad also asked party members not to be spooked by DAP any longer, saying Umno also needs Chinese support to win.

The majority of Chinese voters now support DAP, he added.

“If we want to win the 12 seats, we will need the support of the Chinese. So does the support of Indian voters. Because the Malay votes are now split.

“Insha-Allah, we can win the 12 seats and Umno can again be part of the state government,” he said.

The Umno leader, however, did not specify which 12 seats his party will contest.

Previously, it was reported that Harapan and BN have finalised their seat negotiations for the upcoming six state elections.

However, leaders of both coalitions have been tight-lipped on the number of seats they have agreed upon for each state, and that the list will be revealed when they make the official announcement soon.

Selangor has 56 state seats, of which Umno only won four in the 2018 general election: Sungai Air TawarSungai PanjangHulu Bernam, and Sungai Burong. - Mkini
