PETALING JAYA: Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil says the sedition charges brought against Sanusi Nor have nothing to do with the government.
Fahmi said it was the caretaker Kedah menteri besar’s own fault that he is facing charges of making seditious statements against royalty.
“You made statements that might invoke feelings of disloyalty towards the rulers,” Fahmi, the communications and digital minister, said on Facebook today.
“This has nothing to do with the government.”
Yesterday, Sanusi pleaded not guilty in the Selayang sessions court to two charges of making seditious statements against royalty during a ceramah on July 11.
Both charges were framed under Section 4(1)(a) of the Sedition Act 1948, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both, upon conviction.
Sanusi, the Perikatan Nasional election director, claimed the charges against him were politically motivated ahead of the six state elections on Aug 12.
“In Malaysia, we have a fearful government that uses the police to arrest people and suppress our freedom of speech, with all public agencies being used to impede the development and well-being of the people,” he told reporters outside the court.
“I am confident that with these charges, many Malaysians (now) realise their (government’s) real intentions.”
Sanusi also alleged that the investigation into his cases was rushed as it took only three days to complete. - FMT
