Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi tried his best to obtain a full pardon for jailed ex-premier Najib Abdul Razak, said Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, the Pontian MP told reporters that Umno is now focusing on efforts to obtain a full pardon for Najib.
“Zahid has done many things, not all of which can be stated in public. Yesterday, in the supreme council meeting, he explained all the things that were done for Najib’s full pardon.
“Also this evening, Zahid will explain all the efforts made before 191 Umno division leaders and leaders of the three wings at the Tun Hussein Onn Hall, World Trade Centre,” he said.
No bid to replace Zahid
He also denied the allegation there was an attempt by division leaders to replace Zahid.
“It’s not true, that’s just a jab from those who want to divide Umno. The meeting with all Umno sections this evening is a result of the discussion at the supreme council meeting on Friday.
“The meeting this evening is quite important to explain the true position of the pardon process and efforts Umno has made for full amnesty,” he said.
Yesterday, another Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam said Umno will continue efforts to seek a royal pardon from the new king, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, starting with a signature drive among all Umno leaders and division chiefs.
On Friday, the Pardons Board announced it reduced Najib’s jail term from 12 to six years, which means he would be released from prison on Aug 23, 2028.
In a meeting on Monday (Jan 29), the board, chaired by the previous Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, also slashed the fine slapped on Najib from RM210 million to RM50 million.
Najib began serving a 12-year jail term for conviction in the RM42 million SRC International case in August 2022. - Mkini
