Bersih to march to Parliament, demand PM term limit, Sedition Act reform

Bersih will be marching towards Parliament this Tuesday to demand legislative reforms from the government.

In a social media post, the group said the demonstration would be the first act in their “reformasi 100 peratus” (100 percent reforms) campaign.

Previous postings by Bersih on the campaign highlighted three reforms they wished to “remind” the government of.

The first is for better protection for whistleblowers and to make information from the government more readily available.

The second is for term limits for the prime minister, which was part of the Pakatan Harapan election manifesto.

The third is reforms involving the Sedition Act, in line with Harapan’s electoral pledge to review and abolish draconian laws.

The current government is a post-election coalition led by Harapan.

The government had established a committee to go through and combine the various manifestos of the parties in government.

However, the outcome of this has not been made public.

‘Wear black or yellow’

In its posting today, Bersih called on the public to join them at the National Monument Plaza (Plaza Tugu Negara) at 8am on Tuesday, wearing either black or yellow.

Bersih deputy chairperson Wong Yan Ke confirmed with Malaysiakini that the group then plans to march to Parliament to hand over a memorandum to call for reforms.

Parliament will convene for the first time this year on Monday, where the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong will give a royal address.

The Dewan Rakyat will then begin business on Tuesday. - Mkini
