PETALING JAYA: A hip-hop concert held in Alor Setar’s Taman Jubli Emas last Friday did not get prior approval from the Kedah government, according to housing, local government and health executive council member Mansor Zakaria.
Mansor said the organiser had applied to the state government to hold a sale carnival and did not disclose the plan to have any type of performance on-stage, Sinar Harian reported.
“The organiser only applied to host a sale carnival and other miscellaneous activities that were in accordance with the state government’s guidelines, and so the application was approved.
“Thus, the concert took place without the approval of any state government agency. We consider this a serious violation of the guidelines given to the organiser,” he was quoted as saying.
According to Mansor, the state government will summon the organiser to provide an explanation on the matter. Any action against the organiser will only be decided after that.
Over the weekend, several videos went viral on social media showing a concert known as “Choii Underground Music Tour Kedah 2.0” being held in Alor Setar, Kedah.
The concert was criticised by netizens for being held a day before Nisfu Syaaban, which is considered to be a night of blessings and forgiveness, where Muslims engage in prayers, supplications and seeking forgiveness for their sins.
Sinar Harian reported that the organiser has since issued an apology on TikTok and admitted their oversight in failing to obtain the state government’s approval to hold the concert. - FMT
