PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin has denied allegations on social media that he had corruptly awarded a government car fleet deal to the vehicle management company Spanco.
He said the present government should instead reveal why the Pakatan Harapan government had cancelled a deal with another company in 2020.
The government should also reveal the exact date that the contract was given to Spanco, he said. Spanco is the subject of investigations by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission.
Muhyiddin said in a statement tonight: “Do not make baseless accusations against me. As the prime minister between March 2020 and August 2021, I was not involved in the awarding of any contracts managed by the finance ministry.
“This is part of a series of character assassination by my political enemies aimed at damaging my reputation,” he said.
Last month, MACC said it had launched an investigation into a RM4.5 billion contract for procuring and managing the government’s fleet of vehicles.
It was reported that MACC had wanted to find out why the company was given the job.
Spanco reportedly held the concession to supply and manage the government’s fleet of vehicles from 1993, although this ended in 2019. An open tender was launched that year and a joint venture between Berjaya Group and Naza Sdn Bhd reportedly secured a letter of intent for the deal.
However, Berjaya sued the government and Spanco last year, alleging that the concession was cancelled and arbitrarily awarded to Spanco in 2020. - FMT
