'My brother didn't deserve to be beaten to death because of his criminal record'

The brother of a 41-year-old man, who was tied up and beaten to death after an accident, could not hold back tears when stating that the deceased did not deserve such a violent end because of his past criminal records.

“Yes, he had a history (criminal records). But they (the five accused) did not have the right to do that to my brother,” said Shah Rizad Samad.

He said the five should not have resorted to violence and taken the law into their own hands.

Shah also questioned the need to assault his brother when the latter was caught and tied up, adding that the matter should have been left to the police instead.

“How was he going to protect himself (from the blows)?” he asked.

The 43-year-old civil servant hopes that justice will be served and those responsible for his brother’s death receive an appropriate sentence.

“We don’t have the power to decide (on the sentence). We just want justice,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian when met outside the Magistrate’s Court in Bangi this morning.

Shah said his parents did not have the heart to attend the court proceedings but other family members are “satisfied” after seeing the faces of the accused.

“We wanted to see their faces for a long time, now we are satisfied,” he added.

Charged with murder

Earlier, five food delivery riders were charged with the murder of Shahril Samad under Section 302 read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code for each of several persons liable for an act done by all, in like manner as if done by him or her alone.

No plea was recorded from Syamsul Qamar Ayob, 40, Mahazir Nordin, 43, Azharul Azuan Mohd Azan, 34, Tengku Izham Tengku Hamid, 22 and Mohd Yuree Ranoff Mohd Bachuri, 41 after the charge was read out before Magistrate Nurdiyanah Mohd Nawawi.

The five were accused of murdering the self-employed man at Jalan TPS 2/3 Taman Pelangi, Semenyih, at 9.54pm on Feb 20.

In the incident, Shahril was said to have been chased by the public after his car collided with a food delivery rider’s motorcycle. The chase ended when his car crashed into a fence in Taman Pelangi Semenyih.

According to reports, Shahril was dragged out of his car, had his feet and hands tied before being assaulted.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan later revealed that based on the post-mortem, the deceased tested positive for drugs. He also had 10 previous drug-related criminal records. - Mkini
