A PSM activist was handcuffed and arrested outside the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur today, where a pro-Palestine rally was being held.
A video of the incident showed a plainclothes police officer explaining that Harmit Singh was arrested for disobeying an order not to walk further than where the officer stood.
When contacted, PSM secretary-general A Sivarajan said Harmit was arrested before the protest even began.
“Harmit walked to the US embassy for (the protest), there were only five other people there at the time (of the arrest),” he said when asked to confirm the reason for the police action.
Sivarajan said a notice as per the Peaceful Assembly Act for the demonstration was submitted on Feb 19, and that organisers had met with police on Feb 22.
“Police were fully aware that the event was to give a memorandum (to the US embassy),” he said.
Police have taken Harmit’s documentation and he was released before the event ended, Sivarajan added.
However, the PSM member will be required to give his statement to the police at the Pudu district police headquarters at 7pm tonight.

The US has been accused of aiding the Israeli government in its continued attacks on Gaza since last October in retaliation for an attack carried out by Hamas.
Almost 30,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed thus far.
