Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said that all division chiefs are satisfied with the explanation given to them as to why former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak was not granted a full pardon.
This is after a closed-door briefing was held for them by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the party’s headquarters today.
It is unclear what Zahid told the division chiefs.
However, Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan had said that the party president - who is also the deputy prime minister - had done his best to try and get a full pardon for Najib, not all of which can be made public.
The Pardons Board announced on Friday that Najib's prison sentence in the SRC International case would be halved from 12 years to six, and his fine reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.
Speaking to reporters after the briefing, Asyraf said that the division leaders respect and uphold the Pardons Board decision.
"We respect the decision because the Federal Constitution stated that this is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's sole discretion which can't be questioned by anyone," he said.
He added that the division leaders have also agreed to support the party's continued efforts to secure a full pardon for Najib.
Meanwhile, Asyraf said remarks by former DAP leader Tony Pua lampooning the Pardons Board’s decision would not hurt Umno's ties with other government parties.
He said that Pua's remarks do not represent DAP as a whole or the government.
However, he reiterated that Umno Youth would be lodging police reports against the former Damansara MP.
Police have already initiated a probe against Pua for alleged sedition against the royal institution. - Mkini
