King wants all parties to stop fuelling anger over controversial socks

Yang-di Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has called on all parties to stop taking advantage of the issue of socks bearing the word Allah, saying it should now be left to the authorities.

“I have instructed that action be taken in accordance with the law, so there is no need for any party to continue fuelling anger.

“The action taken is not solely to punish, but also serves as a lesson and reminder to all to uphold the sensitivities of Malaysians,” said the King today.

Sultan Ibrahim said it is better for all concerned to learn from this incident and strive to strengthen unity.

“Persistent anger brings no benefit. All parties, especially community leaders, must act with maturity.

“Let us guide the people towards unity, not division. This is an opportunity to gain a better understanding of each other in our diverse society so that such incidents do not recur,” he decreed.

Earlier today, the Bukit Aman police headquarters also urged all parties, including politicians, to calm down and not incite racial sentiments when discussing the socks issue.

Its criminal investigations chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said this is because the law has already been enforced.

“I want to advise everyone to stand down. Enough. I agree with what (former minister) Khairy Jamaluddin said, we (the police force) are already worried over issues unrelated to race but when it involves two different races, this could become a (racial) issue.

“We don’t want to see an incident like the Kampung Medan (riots) repeating. It will only smear our country’s image,” he said at a press conference held at the national police headquarters today.

Yesterday, Khairy, who is a former Umno Youth chief, urged his successor Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and outraged Muslims to halt their boycott campaign against KK Mart.

The situation resulted in an attempted firebombing of a KK Mart branch in Bidor, Perak, yesterday morning, while police are also investigating an arson threat made against KK Mart’s former supplier Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd and Akmal himself has claimed that a death threat was made against him. - Mkini
