Former DAP politician P Ramasamy has reminded Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who claimed Bersatu was “born of betrayals”, that Umno’s new ally PKR had “the same DNA”.
“If Bersatu was born and nurtured through betrayals and treachery, what about PKR? Isn’t PKR another clone of Umno?
“Was the formation of PKR a betrayal of Umno? Is the current president Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim accused of abandoning Umno?
“The political circumstances for the formation of PKR might be different to Bersatu, but the DNA is the same,” said Ramasamy in a statement today.
“It was Umno members who left the party to join PKR. Why is Asyraf refraining from accusing PKR of betrayals?” he added.
He said there must be something wrong with Umno if Asyraf believes Bersatu deserved to be betrayed by their six MPs who pledged support for the government, along with more rumoured to follow suit.
“Umno is not a virtuous party to speak of betrayals,” said Ramasamy who quit DAP last November to form his own political party.
PKR’s predecessor Parti Keadilan Nasional was founded in 1998 as a platform for the Reformasi movement sparked by Anwar’s sacking from Umno. He was at the time deputy prime minister under Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s first tenure as prime minister.
Asyraf yesterday said while Umno has no issues with the defection of Bersatu MPs who showed support for Anwar’s administration, the fact remains that “traitors will be traitors”.
He said Bersatu was a party “born out of betrayals” to Umno after the 2018 general election and now is forced to pay the price of its own treacherous acts.
Commenting further, Ramasamy suggested that Umno’s current partnership with DAP - which for decades was seen as the party’s archnemesis - is also an act of betrayal.
“Asyraf, coming from a politically tainted party, should be careful in using the word betrayal.
“Can Asyraf defend the political collaboration between PKR and the DAP in Pakatan Harapan?” he asked.
“Aren’t these political parties once enemies of Umno? In this respect, how is Bersatu different from PKR and the DAP?” he added.
Changes in support
To date, six Bersatu MPs have announced their support for Anwar and the government.
The six are Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).
On March 6, Selat Klang assemblyperson Abdul Rashid Asari from Bersatu became the party’s first state representative to announce support for the ruling government.
Others from Bersatu who have officially joined PKR include former supreme council member Muhammad Faiz Na’aman and former Dengkil assemblyperson Adhif Syan Abdullah. - Mkini
