Police find only five pairs of controversial 'Allah' socks at factory

A police search at a factory alleged to be the producer of socks printed with the word Allah yielded only five pairs, which were the ones KK Mart previously returned from its outlet in Bandar Sunway, Selangor.

Batu Pahat district police chief Ismail Dollah said an examination of 18,000 pairs of socks in six large packages found at the factory revealed no other socks printed with the sacred word.

“The investigation discovered that this factory does not manufacture any brand of socks but produces various types of slippers.

“The socks found are imported goods from China and part of a batch ordered from the country,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan.

According to Ismail, the factory is only responsible for packaging and distributing the socks after receiving them from China.

He said only three convenience stores were involved in selling these socks, all located in Sunway, Selangor.

The five pairs have been seized for investigation, he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 98A of the Penal Code, Section 505 of the same code for causing public mischief, and Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act (MCMA) 1998.

The controversy surfaced last week when images of the Miranosock socks being sold at the Bandar Sunway outlet of the KK Mart went viral on social media.

Following the uproar, KK Mart issued an apology to all its customers, particularly the Muslim community, and confirmed that immediate actions had been taken to halt the sale of the socks.

Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has been vocal about the issue, urging for a boycott against KK Mart should the chain fail to display banners apologising for the incident. - Mkini
