1MDB TRIAL | After more than five years of trial since 2019, the RM2.27 billion 1MDB corruption proceedings against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak will also be held on a Saturday.
This was announced at the end of the Kuala Lumpur High Court trial today when deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib confirmed with judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah the next trial dates.
“The next trial dates are from April 22 to 27. Six days (this month) including on a Saturday,” Akram said, referring to the Saturday of April 27.
In Malaysia, court trials are usually conducted Monday to Friday, unless there is a public holiday.
Checks on the judiciary’s online cause list showed that the criminal court had also set five other Saturday dates in upcoming months, namely May 4 and 25, June 1, 8, and 15.
Sequerah previously indicated to the prosecution and defence teams that the criminal court wished for further trial dates to include weekends, due to the case being long-standing.
Najib is on trial for four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.27 billion from 1MDB.
For the four abuse of power charges, the former Pekan MP is alleged to have committed the offences at AmIslamic Bank Bhd’s Jalan Raja Chulan branch in Bukit Ceylon, Kuala Lumpur, between Feb 24, 2011, and Dec 19, 2014.
On the 21 money laundering counts, Najib is purported to have committed the offences at the same bank between March 22, 2013, and Aug 30, 2013.
1MDB is fully owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated.
