Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin today said BN components MCA and MIC would be better off supporting his coalition in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.
He said this is because public sentiment has turned against Pakatan Harapan - BN’s partner in government.
“Whether they support (a Harapan candidate) or boycott, it’s better for them to boycott.
“If they don’t support (Harapan), it would be better for them to support us,” said the Bersatu president at a press conference after a PN Hari Raya open house in Kuala Kubu Baharu, Selangor.
Yesterday, MCA president Wee Ka Siong reportedly said he suggested to Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim that the by-election candidate be from BN, rather than DAP.
Meanwhile, Muhyiddin said it is not wrong for Gerakan to express its intention to contest the seat, but a final decision will be made by PN’s supreme council, with an expected announcement on April 25.
Asked whether PN will be fielding a Malay candidate, the former prime minister noted there were suggestions from the grassroots that will be discussed based on potential winnability.
“We know this is a DAP area, we don’t know their candidate, but for us, we have a strategy to win majority support,” he said.
He stressed the importance of understanding the Kuala Kubu Baharu constituency, which comprises some 46 percent Malays, 30 percent Chinese, 18 percent Indians, and five percent others including Orang Asli.
He also claimed there is a clear sentiment across all races when it comes to unhappiness over the government’s alleged failures.
“It (the by-election) will not change the Selangor government’s status quo as it is only one seat.
“But it will send a signal to the government on how the people are feeling,” he said.
At last year’s Selangor state election, DAP’s Lee Kee Hiong successfully defended the seat against Gerakan’s Teoh Kien Hong, Muda’s Siva Prakash Ramasamy, and Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Chng Boon Lai with a majority of 4,119 votes.
The seat fell vacant when Lee passed away on March 21.
Polling for the by-election will take place on May 11, while nomination day falls on April 27. - Mkini
