Cops: KLIA shooting suspect previously nabbed for threatening wife

The suspect involved in the shooting in the Arrival Hall at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 1 was arrested in Dec last year for threats made against his wife.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the threats were the reason why the woman, who was the actual target, hired bodyguards over safety concerns.

Shuhaily (above) also said the shooter, 38-year-old Hafizul Marawi, had previous criminal records involving robbery and impersonating civil servants.

"We urge the suspect to surrender himself at any police station because what has been done cannot be reversed.

"The police will investigate this case under Section 307 (of the Penal Code) for attempted murder and Section 8 (of the Arms Act 1960) for unlawful possession of firearms," he said at a press conference at KLIA 1, Sepang today.

He added that through the initial investigation, the suspect had obtained firearms illegally and a manhunt had been called nationwide.

As of now, the police concluded there were no elements of terror as it was a targeted hit job, adding it was a personal vendetta.

Shuhaily also confirmed that the suspect is going through a divorce process with his wife.

On the condition of the shooting victim, Shuhaily said the bodyguard is currently in critical condition after being shot in the abdomen.

Earlie -r today, it was reported that an individual was believed to have shot at his wife but hit her bodyguard instead in a shooting incident at 1.15am.

The suspect was believed to have fled north, according to police.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said investigations revealed the suspect intended to shoot at his wife. - Mkini
