Field Malay candidate for Kuala Kubu Baharu polls, says PH leader

Selangor PH deputy chairman Borhan Aman Shah said the candidate for the by-election should be a professional rather than a career politician.

PETALING JAYA: A Selangor Pakatan Harapan leader has suggested that DAP consider fielding a Malay candidate in the coming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election since Malays make up the majority in the constituency.

Selangor PH deputy chairman Borhan Aman Shah said he personally believed this should be considered, citing the high percentage of Malay voters there and the “current political situation”.

“(During the 14th general election) DAP fielded a Malay candidate (Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof) for the Dusun Tua state seat and won.

“They also fielded Young Syefura Othman (to contest the Bentong parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election) and won.

“My view is that it would be better if DAP can field a Malay candidate.

“Although the late former assemblyman (Lee Kee Hiong) was excellent at her job, winning the seat isn’t guaranteed because many issues can be played up by our rivals in this by-election,” he told FMT.

Borhan said the candidate should be a professional rather than a career politician as he expected the by-election to be the centre of attention.

Kuala Kubu Baharu voters go to the polls on May 11 following the death of DAP’s Lee, a three-term assemblyman, on March 21 after a battle with cancer.

It has a mixed electorate, comprising about 46% Malay, 30% Chinese and 18% Indian voters, and falls under the Hulu Selangor parliamentary constituency, represented by Perikatan Nasional’s Hasnizan Harun.

Borhan also expressed confidence that the combination of PH and Barisan Nasional would ensure that DAP retains the seat.

“We have the edge because the federal government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has been excellent in serving the people, and I hope that this will have some impact on the outcome of the by-election,” he said. - FMT
