Iran launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel yesterday, beginning an attack that may trigger a major escalation between the regional foes.
According to The Guardian, the launch of what are believed to be powerful Iran-manufactured Shahed-136 drones was confirmed by both the Israeli military and Iran’s state-linked Press TV.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp said it also launched ballistic missiles at “specific targets” in Israel as part of what it deemed “Operation True Promise”.
“In response to the numerous crimes committed by the Zionist regime… the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired dozens of missiles and drones at specific targets inside the occupied territories [Israel],” state TV reported.
Iran has vowed retaliation for what it called an Israeli strike on its Damascus consulate on April 1 that killed seven Guards officers including two senior commanders and said its strike was a punishment for “Israeli crimes”.
According to Reuters, Israeli Channel 12 said some missiles and drones had been shot down over Syria and Jordan.
Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the consulate attack.
