Pointing to Akmal's sedition probe, PKR MPs rebuff Ramasamy

PKR MPs have brushed off the latest salvo fired by former Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy who declared yesterday that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was a failure at his job.

Among others, Ramasamy (above) accused Anwar of selective prosecution when it comes to corruption and said the PKR president lacked courage and vision to control recalcitrant politicians like Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.

Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung told Malaysiakini that the fact that Akmal was being investigated under the Sedition Act and the Communications and Multimedia Act for his actions in the KK Mart controversy showed that action was being taken.

"The fact that Akmal is being investigated by the police is testimony that the unity government has taken a firm position without fear or favour.

"The government has so far been skilful in de-escalating many race and religious issues in the past, and is not being taken advantage of by those who wish to score political points with their divisive politics," said Lee.

Ramasamy, once a staunch ally of Anwar, was dropped by DAP and reacted by forming Urimai, an Indian rights organisation.

Recently, Ramasamy vowed to campaign against Pakatan Harapan in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election and sought to build ties with the opposition Perikatan Nasional coalition.

In his statement yesterday, he said Anwar poorly handled the current situation and took the premier to task for failing to deliver on reforms.

"Malaysia is on the path towards reform. You may disagree with the pace, but no one, including Ramasamy, would say that the direction is wrong.

"The unity government will continue to deliver the reform package that no other viable political block would be able to do," Lee added.

Let voters decide

Meanwhile, Segamat MP R Yuneswaran acknowledged there was some impatience and frustration amongst Harapan supporters over the pace of reform.

"Partially, he is right in that people have very high expectations.

"Anwar alone will not be able to solve this but the whole cabinet has to function and work harder," he said.

Yuneswaran also suggested that Ramasamy leave the judgement to the voters.

"The ground sentiments are different and I think we should let the people make the judgement," he added. - Mkini
