The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) will determine whether a logo, which appears on the sole of several of Vern's footwear models, is Arabic writing for the word "Allah" or just a graphic design of a shoe.
This is according to Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain, who told a press conference this morning that police are liaising with Jakim in its investigation into the latest religious controversy.
“Jakim’s report is crucial,” he said in Kuala Lumpur.
Razarudin told reporters that police have seized 1,145 pairs of shoes from Vern’s outlets in several states to facilitate the investigation.
Police will also summon those involved in manufacturing and selling of the shoes to record their statement, he said.
"Investigation is ongoing," Razarudin said.
The latest controversy started when a photo of a shoe by the local fashion brand went viral on social media for allegedly sporting a design that resembled the word “Allah” on its sole.
The allegations appeared to have first surfaced on TikTok on March 23. However, it caught wider attention on social media yesterday after a couple posted about it on Facebook.
Vern’s has since issued a statement to clarify that the graphic on the soles of some of their footwear that has caused controversy is a stylised heel. - Mkini
