Siti Shahrima Abd Rahim, who works as a part-time waitress at a Johor Bahru hotel, was fined after she pleaded guilty to one count under the Dental Registration Act, Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported.
Shahrima had learnt how to perform dental procedures by watching YouTube videos after the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent movement restrictions prevented her from visiting her dentist. She was wearing braces at the time.
She then began to advertise dental services, such as veneer whitening as well as tooth and braces whitening, charging her clients between S$650 and S$700 for her services, with these procedures carried out in hotel rooms in Singapore.
However, authorities came to know of her ruse when a customer, who was unable to floss her teeth after getting veneers, reported her.
According to the customer, Shahrima had claimed that she was a dentist from Malaysia who travelled to Singapore to attend to patients and customers.
She provided composite veneers to 20 customers and performed brace maintenance for 10. She also provided cosmetic braces to at least one customer.
She had performed these procedures even though she was not registered as a dentist under Singapore’s Dental Registration Act, nor did she have a valid practising certificate.
Singapore’s health ministry prosecutor sought a fine for Shahrima as her “procedures” could have led to more serious injuries.
She paid the fine in full. - FMT
