KUALA LUMPUR: Social media platform providers Meta and TikTok have pledged their commitment to ensure online safety measures for children below 13.

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said the agreement was reached during a discussion today that touched on other elements such as the monitoring of content related to online gambling, scams, fake news, and issues involving race, religion and royalty.

“The two social media platform providers were also notified of the government’s plans for a better legal framework involving online safety, policies and guidelines for social media platform operations in Malaysia,” he said on Facebook.

Fahmi had said last week that his ministry, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and several agencies would meet Meta today to discuss aspects of online safety and fake news.

This followed a series of fake news concerning a national Quran recital event, after “coordinated messages” had said that there would be no “Majlis Tilawah dan Hafazan Al-Quran Peringkat Kebangsaan” this year.

“This is despite deputy religious affairs minister Zulkifli Hasan issuing a statement saying the event will take place in May,” Fahmi had said, adding that he had tasked MCMC with investigating those involved.

“This is something we look at seriously and if Meta fails to cooperate, we have a few things we can do,” he said. - FMT
