Salary no longer top reason why employees leave - survey

 


A survey of over 2,800 professionals and employers in Malaysia has found that salary packages are no longer the primary factor for employees choosing to remain with a company.

The 2024 Hays Asia Salary Guide, which polled 2,014 skilled professionals and 832 employers in Malaysia, revealed that a desire to seek new challenges has surpassed low salary packages as the main reason employees want to leave their jobs across Asia.

In the survey conducted over six weeks late last year, employees looking for new opportunities within the next 12 months were asked to list their top three reasons for wanting to leave their current workplace.

A similar survey in 2022 identified low salary packages as the primary reason employees were quitting their jobs.

For those who chose to stay, flexible work options were unanimously selected as the most important factor contributing to their decision, rated even above salary considerations.

Among committed employees, a good work-life balance and a good fit with managers and colleagues were ranked second and third, respectively.

“A healthy working environment, positive values and a sufficiently challenging role will go a long way towards winning the hearts of employees in Malaysia.

“Leaders need to have these discussions with their workforce, and employees need to examine how they can enhance their value in this period of disruption.

“Collaboration is the key to survival, and both parties will need to face these challenges with open minds and a willingness to adapt,” Hays Asia managing director Marc Burrage said.
