Not a 3R case, Guan Eng defends Teresa over halal cert probe

DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng has defended Seputeh MP Teresa Kok over the halal certification issue saying that this is not a case involving race, religion and royalty (3R) as some quarters alleged.

This came after Kok remarked that making halal certification mandatory for restaurants would burden businesses following a government proposal to do so.

“Everyone from Muslims to non-Muslims has given their views (on the matter).

“As a professional, a parliamentarian should be given space to do their duty as per the expectation of those who elected her,” Lim (above, right) said at a press conference outside the Bukit Aman police headquarters.

Police had questioned Kok over the matter this morning as supporters and DAP leaders gathered outside in show of support.

The DAP vice-chairperson was accompanied by her lawyers Syahredzan Johan and Ramkarpal Singh.

Among others in the group were Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai and Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun.

On Sunday, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said that five police reports had been lodged against the MP and classified the matter as touching on 3R.

Kok is being investigated under Sections 298 and 505(b) of the Penal Code for allegedly causing religious offences and statements conducive to public mischief.

She is also being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 related to misuse of network facilities.

Keep calm and professional

Yesterday, former law minister Zaid Ibrahim defended Kok and lashed out at DAP for their meek support of their MP.

“Kok, my condolences. (DAP secretary-general Anthony) Loke’s meek support for Kok was all DAP could do, telling us she was doing her job as an MP.

“What about DAP ministers doing their job about this matter? No, they are just loyal followers who could do nothing more than keep quiet. Simply put, Kok is now thrown under the bus,” he said.

On that note, Lim said that DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke had instructed Kok’s lawyers to work on the case to the best of their abilities.

“And I stress again that Kok was only doing her job as an MP and did nothing wrong.

“We would leave it to the police and I hope everyone remains calm and professional in dealing with this,” the former finance minister added. - Mkini
