PN, Bersatu will rise again after humbling Mahkota defeat: Muhyiddin

Perikatan Nasional’s defeat in yesterday’s Mahkota by-election will not break its spirit, and the coalition will keep fighting, said Muhyiddin Yassin.

Its chairperson expressed confidence that PN would rise again.

“God willing, PN and Bersatu in particular will rise again with a more precise spirit to achieve victory on the democratic stage,” he said in a media statement today.

BN’s Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah won the Johor state seat in style, winning by 20,648 votes after obtaining 27,995 votes compared to PN’s Mohamad Haizan Jaafar, who only got 7,347.

Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, said his party must openly accept Mahkota voters' message and take immediate steps to improve its performance.

“I would like to thank all Mahkota voters who voted for the PN candidate. I would also like to say a big thank you to the PN machinery that has worked hard to help the PN candidate.

“I really appreciate your sacrifice of time, energy, and money in this by-election. PN respects the choice of Mahkota voters in line with the spirit of democracy,” the former premier added.

The by-election was called following the death of the incumbent assemblyperson, Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.

In the 2022 Johor state election, BN’s Sharifah won by a comfortable margin of 5,166 voters over Pakatan Harapan’s Muhammad Taqiuddin Cheman.

She secured 16,611 votes over Taqiuddin's tally of 11,445, with PN’s Mohamad Nor Lingan coming in a distant third with 7,614 votes, which amounted to 21 percent of the total votes cast. - Mkini
