PARLIAMENT | Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said an existing law prevents the appointment of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) councillors.
However, she told the Dewan Rakyat today that she has instructed the Federal Territories Department and DBKL to study the Act in question - the Federal Capital Act 1960 - as it has not been amended since its enactment.
"The Act provides for a maximum of 15 members of the advisory board (Kuala Lumpur City Advisory Board) who function to advise the mayor on the management of the city," she explained, responding to DAP’s Tan Kok Wai (Harapan-Cheras).
She pointed to the reactivation of the Federal Territory Minister Council, which was announced in January last year, as an alternative measure.
The council involves MPs from the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory constituencies in examining policy-related matters, she added.
Prior to its reactivation, the council last met in 2019.
Besides that, Zaliha said those MPs also joined the Kuala Lumpur mayor in another council established by DBKL.
In the previous Dewan Rakyat sitting, another DAP MP, Lim Lip Eng (Harapan- Kepong), urged the government to allow the appointment of local councillors into DBKL, following the example of other states. - Mkini
