PITAS: Twenty children from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Mangkapon were still unable to attend school as the only access road remains submerged following severe flooding two weeks ago.

The affected students are from Kampung Latip, Patani Baru, and Batu 10 Lout.

The school's Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) chairman Juniol Masingkin, 49, said the flooded roads include Jalan Kampung Petani, Batu 10, Lout, Pungiton Polod, and Lumikong.

"Even large vehicles cannot pass through the floodwaters. Only boats can navigate the area.

"If the rain continues into the evening, these students may still be unable to attend school tomorrow as the water levels on the road are expected to rise further."

He said the waist-deep flooding would occur two to three times a year, particularly during heavy rainfall.

"The most recent incident happened over two weeks ago, when continuous downpours lasting more than a week led to severe flooding in Pitas."

However, Juniol said parents are doing their best to ensure their children's education is not disrupted.

"If the water level is below waist height, parents are willing to wade through the floodwaters for about 4km to get their children to school.

"However, there is no alternative route for residents to enter or exit the village during such disasters," he said, adding that some students have to stay at a hostel to ensure regular attendance. - NST
