Cop held over RM15,000 in bribes to protect drug trafficking activities

ALOR STAR: A policeman has been arrested for allegedly soliciting and accepting about RM15,000 in bribes from a drug dealer in exchange for protecting drug trafficking activities in the state from enforcement action.

The man, in his 30s, was detained about 2pm today when he arrived to record his statement at the Kedah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office.

Investigations indicated the offences took place throughout 2024.

He is believed to have received monthly payments of between RM200 and RM2,500 through transfers into his personal bank account.

Kedah MACC director Datuk Nazli Rasyid Sulong confirmed the arrest.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries up to 20 years' jail and a minimum fine of five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. - NST
