MCA objected to the proposed changes in the Income Tax Act which would give the director-general of Inland Revenue Board sole discretion over late or incorrect submissions, said its president Dr Chua Soi Lek.
He said the objection was for the proposed inclusion of the new Section 107D and changes to Section 81.
"If the amendments are passed, the new Section 107D will enable the director-general to direct taxpayers to make advance payments if he has reasons to believe that taxpayers have not submitted their returns correctly, even if no assessments were issued.
"Meanwhile, the proposed changes to Section 81 would eventually lead to the absolute power of the director-general to disregard any information, beyond the expiry of the specified time," he said when contacted.
He said the party had discussed the matter during its presidential council meeting on Tuesday and that MCA representatives in the cabinet had been asked to raise the matter at the cabinet meeting.
‘No room for appeal’
Apart from that, Chua said the party would raise the matter in the National Economic Council (NEC), where he is a member.
“MCA feels the proposed changes will give too much power to one person and no room for appeal. Taxpayers should have the right to appeal," he said.
Meanwhile, MCA in a statement said opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s criticism of the financial aid as spelled out in 2012 Budget was invalid as the opposition pact state governments had also been handing out monetary assistance.
MCA central committee member Loh Seng Kok said Anwar’s criticisms were impractical as on the other hand, Anwar praises the tiny amount of cash which the DAP-led Penang state government gives to new born babies, single parents and senior citizens.
