KUALA LUMPUR— Karpal Singh today demanded that action be taken against Datuk Seri Najib Razak for his remarks made about the Sodomy II trial during the Umno general assembly, saying that it constituted “criminal contempt of court.”
The veteran lawyer, who is Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s lead counsel, charged that the prime minister had criticised the PKR de facto leader during the assembly for making a statement from the dock instead of giving a sworn statement.
“The PM’s remarks constitute criminal contempt of court requiring this court to act suo moto (of its own motion) to issue a notice to show cause to the prime minister why he should not be cited for contempt.
“The heavy musketry of the law should spare no one, however high,” Karpal said during the opening of the defence’s closing submissions in the trial.
