Adam asked 'strange' question over 'Najib flag'

The student activist involved in the flag-lowering incident at the Umno headquarters last month was called up today to give a statement following a police report lodged against him.

NONEAdam Adli Abdul Halim, 23, (right, with lawyer) was investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code.

The Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student, who was accompanied by his counsel Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, was questioned this morning at the Dang Wangi police district headquarters.

Fadiah said the police inspector who recorded the statement, posed 11 questions to Adam, and the latter chose to remain silent.

She found one of the questions "quite strange", as the inspector asked Adam, if he had stepped on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's flag.

"The question asked was if you had stepped on the flag you lowered, this is false allegation, no such thing as stepping on the flag," Fadiah said.

Fadiah denied any wrongdoing, and claimed that the act of lowering a flag, was a legitimate way of expression.

Meanwhile, Adam said he was shocked as the police had totally no grounds to drag him in for investigations.

However, the 22-year old student activist said he would have no problems if the police were to charge him in court.

Under the Section 504, an intentional insult, with intent to provoke a breach of peace, is considered a crime.
Adam Adli, who heads Legasi Mahasiswa Progresif (LMP), lowered a flag depicting Najib at the Putra World Trade Centre on Dec 17, during a march by 500 students to meet Deputy Higher Education Minister Saifuddin Abdullah to hand in a memorandum on academic freedom.

He was speaking after the handing of the memorandum at police headquarters in Bukit Aman, where DSP Venugopal Navaretnam from the public relations department met with the students at 2.40pm.

About 20 students from SMM and Gerakan Menuntut Kebebasan Akademik (Bebas) were present.

At around 2.40am on Jan 1, police arrested 17 students holding a sit-in demanding for academic freedom.

During the crackdown, several students were allegedly injured by the police, and one was hospitalised.
