Masked group saves Adam Adli from 'UPSI bullies'

Already suspended for three semesters from Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI), student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim today courted ‘danger’ by yet again lowering a ‘flag’ bearing the prime minister’s face.

But soon enough, his brazen move is spotted by the the UPSI disciplinary panel. Will he escape unscathed this time?

Such were the scenes which kept shoppers and passers-by at Dataran Maybank, in Kuala Lumpur’s shopping district, in suspense, as a flashmob on academic freedom was staged today.

According to a Occupy Dataran media coordinator, about 50 people, mostly students, took part in the flashmob-cum-street theatre for academic freedom.

Contacted after the event, he said the flashmob was a reenactment of what had happened to Adam Adli after he lowered a banner with the face of PM Najib Abdul Razak at PWTC last month, with a twist.

“They bully (Adam) and push him to the ground. They do the victory dance, which is the chicken dance, twice while kicking and punching Adam,” he said, describing the colourful scene.

But their victory was not to last long.

‘UPSI, why you so lansi?’

As they flap their arms in celebration, someone from the crowd tells them to turn around, where they find a sizeable group of people wearing Guy Fawkes masks.

They carry a banner which read “UPSI, y u so lansi?” (UPSI, why are you so arrogant?). The phrase is  coined using the popular ‘Y U NO’ text message meme.

According to the coordinator, there were several police personnel “observing” the flashmob but they did not stop the performance.

“They were really good (to us) actually, although I think they didn’t know what was going on since it didn’t really look like a protest,” he said.
