Last weekend’s closed-door meeting in Sabah held by the state’s Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders and Najib Razak attested the prime minister’s determination to secure BN’s future by adequately preparing its machinery in time to face the coming general election.
The visit to the East Malaysian state was timely as many things needed to be ironed out among the coalition parties there, namely Umno, PBS, LDP, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and Upko, as the 13th General Election draws near.
Some 200 state BN leaders were present at the two-hour meeting which was also attended by Umno vice president Shafie Apdal, deputy chief minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan and, of course, the state’s main man himself, chief minister Musa Aman. Najib’s key message in the meeting was for all BN members to secure the rakyat’s loyalty to the party while understanding BN’s struggle. Sources say what the Najib said in the meeting affirmed the BN chairman’s dedication and sincerity behind his efforts to reform his party in order to take the party and the country to the next level.
In the meeting, Najib stressed the importance for all Malaysians to understand each other’s culture so that we can progress as a nation. He said the people must appreciate the harmony and stability forged by Malaysians of all races. He also refrained from criticizing the Opposition but instead explained many things that need to be improved in BN to ensure itself victory in the pivotal 13th General Election. What matters most, he tells the Sabahan BN leaders, is to ensure BN will remain in power.
Najib also told the leaders that he will not accept the proposed names of candidates provided by all BN liaison chiefs in each state as he has other resources that he will be referring to and he wants to be fair to all. Sources surmised Najib’s message as a heartfelt call for BN leaders to buck up as the election, which is rumored to be held in June, nears.
