Plans by the Penang government to build a new tolled road in Penang contradicts Pakatan Rakyat's policy to do away with toll charges for all roads, said MCA.
MCA Youth professionals bureau head Chua Tee Yong said this was hypocritical of Pakatan, which consistently accused BN of burdening the road users with high toll charges.
“As when the Barisan government decided to listen to the people and abolish certain tolls by paying compensation to the highway concessionaires, Pakatan then criticised Barisan for paying the companies too much.
“However, when Pakatan suddenly became the state government of Penang, they too decided to implement tolls for the tunnel and the second bridge," said Chua in a statement yesterday.
On March 21, Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng said that toll charges were needed for the planned undersea tunnel and Penang second bridge or the companies running it will go bankrupt.
Earlier this month, the Penang government awarded Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) a RM8 billion contract for an integrated road project.
However, only the tunnel portion will have toll charges and that it must be charged at the same rate as the Penang Bridge II, which is a federal government project.

Unlike most federal government agreements with highway operators, the Penang government will not be compensating BUCG for any losses.
Lim said that the project would help spur economic growth over the next 20 years.
