Jakim: Reject human rights that contradict with Islam

Muslims should reject human rights that contradict with Islamic teachings, says the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), which went on to call for serious legal action against human rights proponents who undermine Islam's position in the country.

In its Friday sermon text for mosques in Kuala Lumpur, Jakim pointed specifically at Comango, a coalition of Malaysian NGOs that submitted a report to the United Nations ahead of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Malaysia's human rights standing, which will be heard in Geneva next Thursday.

"According to the information received, it is clear that several of the reports sent separately to the UN by these NGOs will undermine Islam in this country," the sermon text says.

Comango yesterday denied claims that its report to the UN was meant to undermine Islam in the country.

'Human rights proponents fighting for LGBTQs'

Jakim said the human rights proponents were fighting for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community, whose sexuality and acts are considered immoral in Islam.

"The big question is why such negative practices are continuing in this country? This is because of the understanding of pluralism that is increasing in the country," the sermon says.

"Remember that in Islam, every individual does not have complete freedom."

The sermon urged all Muslims in the country to unite and reject "attempts" by the human rights groups to promote acts that are contradictory to the federal constitution and Islamic teachings.

It also urged Muslims to preach and spread their teachings in order to prevent the more groups promoting human rights from spreading their ideology.

"We are confident the UN is rational enough not to believe all the negative reports that this group will present about our country," Jakim said.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom had earlier called for special prayers to be conducted for the country in mosques and surau throughout the UPR session in Geneva.
