Ridhuan Tee Abdullah has warned Umno that the increase in toll fares may take a toll on the party’s fortunes in the next general election.

The academician acknowledged that he is "confused" over the government’s move.

NONEIn his column in Sinar Harian, Ridhuan (right) said Umno should be formulating strategies to ensure that Malay voters do not fall prey to the opposition campaign.

"But this is not the case. The people are instead told of impending toll fare hikes by the Umno-led government. I am becoming increasingly confused.

"What is the meaning of the 1Malaysia tagline of 'people first, performance now'? Does it mean that the people are first only during election time?" he asked.

Ridhuan advised the government to find other means to boost the nation’s economy, instead of burdening the people.

"In the past, 'Melayu mudah lupa' (Malays forget easily). But not any more. The Malays are remembering things that have been forgotten before.

"I am worried that in the next general election, Umno will feel the repercussions... my friends who were once pro-BN are now getting upset with the coalition," Ridhuan added.

Furthermore, he said, the increase in toll fares was not reflected in terms of more efficient highways without traffic jams.

"Has the government become blind? How are the people to cope with all these price hikes. So, is it true that BN stands for 'Barang Naik'?" he asked.

He said the government should re-examine the agreements signed with highway concessionaires if these deals are lopsided.

"What is strange is why did we ink a stupid agreement that does not benefit the people, similar to the water agreement with Singapore?" he added.

Logically, Ridhuan said, toll fares should be reduced since there are more vehicles now and  roads are not repaired on a daily basis.

"I wish to remind Umno and BN... don’t allow the Malays to continue to get hurt. It is not impossible for them to turn their support for the ultra-kiasu party," he added.
