Facebook users launch drive to save Bujang Valley

A campaign has been launched by Facebook users to save Bujang Valley and for action taken against irresponsible government officials and housing developer.
PETALING JAYA: Social networking site Facebook has started a campaign to save Bujang Valley in Kedah where ancient Indian tomb temples are located by sharing information on the significance of the area.
The Facebook page, One Million Likes to Save Bujang Valley, was launched on Sunday and had received 10,961 likes as of 8.40am this morning.
There are calls for action to be taken against irresponsible government officials and the land developer.
On Friday, FMT reported the demolition of the most famous eighth century tomb temple by a housing developer.
Excavations at the archeological site had revealed jetty remains, iron-smelting areas and a clay-brick monument dating back to 110AD, making it the oldest man-made structure recorded in South-East Asia.
Bujang Valley itself was among the earliest most important entry points to Peninsular Malaysia. Sailors used the Jerai Mountain as a reference point to make their way in.
According to the information shared on the Facebook page, the archaeological remains proved the existence of a Hindu-Buddhist civilization.
Penang Heritage Trust honorary secretary Clement Liang revealed yesterday that the site had been submitted to Unesco to be certified as a World Heritage site.
The remnants of the temple in Bujang Valley’s Site 11 is known as Candi Sungai Batu by a non-governmental organisation called Bujang Valley Study Circle.
State government agencies had initially claimed that they were unable to act since the remnants were located on private land.
This drew the ire of opposition lawmakers such as PKR vice-president N Surendran who said the inaction of the Kedah government and the federal government as cultural barbarism.
Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir had issued an immediate stop-work order to the developer.
Mukhriz told Bernama he would have a meeting to find out what actually happened in Sungai Batu and to get a true picture.
