Government denies discrimination in giving of aid to flood victims

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (pic, left) has denied that Barisan Nasional (BN) practised discrimination when handing out aid to flood victims in Kuantan, as alleged by PKR lawmaker Fuziah Salleh.
He said Fuziah's accusations were not true as BN had always prioritised the rights and the interests of the people, especially in a serious matter such as floods.
"We don't look at the stamp on their foreheads... which party they are from, when giving aid.
"The government does not play government politics. Our policy is to put the people first. Allah forbids us to have bad suspicions about others," he told The Malaysian Insider today.
Fuziah (pic, right), who is Kuantan MP, had earlier rapped the federal government for its delayed response in providing aid to flood victims there.
She had tabled a motion in Parliament to compel Putrajaya to declare a state of emergency in several areas in Pahang to deal with the situation but it was rejected by the Speaker who said it needed a two-day notice and it needed to be in writing.
Shahidan assured her that aid was being deployed to help the thousands of affected residents.
He also confirmed that the flood situation had worsened in Pahang, Terengganu and Johor, noting that was why rescue operations have been mounted and aid has been sent to help the victims.
"The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has sent two helicopters to evacuate trapped victims. However, the situation is tough as the water levels are high and operation centres have been flooded as well," he said.
Shahidan welcomed information from the public about the situation in order to track victims, and said they could inform the state or federal operations centres.
