Isa Samad: Perkasa cannot replace Umno

Trouncing any ability of Perkasa in replacing Umno in looking after Malays in the country, Umno supreme council member Isa Samad today described the Malay right wing NGO's ambition to replace Umno as an "emotional viewpoint".

The responsibility of protecting the interests of the Malay community, assumed by Umno all these while, is not an easy task, Isa said while speaking to reporters at a press conference after the Yayasan Felda Graduation Ceremony today.

NONEIn fact, he said, Perkasa itself has received plenty of aid from Umno since it was formed.

"This is just an emotional viewpoint. Taking over (the duties of) Umno is not easy," said Isa (left), a long-time memberi besar of Negeri Sembilan and currently head of the state plantation giant Felda.

"We protected Perkasa and it received plenty of benefits from us. How will it replace us?" Isa asked.

Addressing the Perkasa annual general meeting in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, its president Ibrahim Ali touted Perkasa as the most structured political party in the country, with 500,000 members.

Ibrahim went on to offer Perkasa as an alternative to Umno on Malay issues, ostensibly because Umno was at risk of losing its influence in mainstream politics.

'Know what's a KPI first, Ibrahim'

Ibrahim (below) also said Perkasa will be keeping tabs on the key performance indicators (KPI) of the prime minister and his cabinet and will be the ‘informant’ to the people on the government’s performance in protecting the interests of the Malays.

He said during the inception of Wawasan 2020, the incumbent premier at that time Dr Mahathir set a target of six to seven percent economic growth by the year 2020.

However, Dr Mahathir himself did not foresee the country would fall prey to the 1997 economic crisis, he said.

“So those who want  to impose KPIs on us should have a thorough understanding on this matter first."
