Increased crime and sex trade incidents in Bandar Sunway raise concerns and calls for auxiliary police presence denied eventhough local council willing to pay, says Wong Chen.
PETALING JAYA: Kelana Jaya MP Wong Chen wants more police presence in combating the rising sex trade, drug distribution and snatch thefts in the Bandar Sunway area.
Wong informed FMT that presently the ratio was five policemen to thirty thousand residents in the Desa Mentari, Bandar Sunway area.
FMT contacted Wong, following a report in today’s New Straits Times (NST) headlined ‘Sex Trade – Foreign prostitutes are giving Bandar Sunway a bad reputation’.
According to the report, foreign prostitutes were enrolling themselves for language courses in international colleges in order to fool the authorities.
The foreign sex workers are mainly from China, Vietnam and Africa.
Stationing themselves at spas and local pubs where they solicit for customers, it is believed that their prices range from RM 200 to RM 350.
Wong suggested the federal government approve the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council’s (MBPJ) recent request to have auxiliary police presence in these areas to monitor and fight the increasing crime in his constituency.
The PKR MP further questions why the government hesitates to approve auxiliary police presence in his area eventhough the local council is willing to fund the exercise.
He hopes that the local community will work together with the police to combat the increasing crime.
When FMT contacted Petaling Jaya police district chief Arjunaidi Mohamed, he said that the police are aware of the sex trade situation in Desa Mentari and they are conducting round the clock operations in order to bust the illegal trade.
Arjunaidi clarified that most of the foreign sex workers were not students but hold tourist visas and they solicit customers on the streets, in pubs and spas.
