Muslim foster mum charged for ABUSING TO DEATH 18-yr-old girl who newly converted to Islam

ALOR STAR - AN eatery operator yesterday claimed trial to a charge of causing the death of her 18-year-old foster daughter.

Sharom Bee Ismail, 43, was alleged to have abused Nai Ah Nung, or her Muslim name Nur Salina Abdullah, in Kampung Belanga Pecah, Langkawi, between October and early last month.

She was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum 30 years' imprisonment and fine.

She pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to her before Magistrate Ooi Sheow Yea.

Clad in an orange shirt and black scarf, Sharom Bee appeared calm when the court fixed Jan 29 for mention pending an official post-mortem report.

It was reported that the teenage girl, who slipped into a coma after being admitted to the intensive care unit at Langkawi Hospital, passed away about 8.40pm on Nov 17.

She was believed to have been abused following the discovery of bruises found on her body.

The initial probe into the case led to the arrest of Sharom Bee and her 36-year-old husband.

The victim's biological father, Nai Koi See, 42, was quoted as saying he last saw Nur Salina after she sat for Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) two years ago.

He said Nai, the youngest of two children, stayed with her foster parents, who were also her employers, after she converted to Islam in January this year.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Rizal Fadzil. The accused was unrepresented. - NST
