Anwar Ibrahim made an 'appearance' at the Umno general assembly when party president Najib Abdul Razak showed delegates a video clip showing the opposition leader allegedly claiming that Bangladeshis voted in the 13th general election.
In the one-minute video - a combination of news clips and videos from various news portals - Anwar is shown claiming that up to 40,000 phantom voters were flown into Malaysia to vote. But who the voters were was not specified.
Leadership by lying?
The video, put together by the Malaysian Gazette, also contained a clip by KiniTV showing Anwar speaking at a ceramah, claiming that BN won because of Bangladeshi and Indonesians voting.
The video screening, which took place in the middle of Najib's policy speech, was met with hooting from the delegates.
In his speech, the prime minister reiterated that even the Bangladeshi government had denied this claim.
He once again recounted how Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina "shook her head and denied the claim" when he raised the issue during a meeting in Dhaka last month.
Speaking at the Dewan Merdeka, Putra World Trade Centre, Najib also chided Anwar for denying that he made the claim on Bangladeshis voting.
Anwar claimed that he never specified where the phantom voters came from and that he was wrongly accused by "Umno bloggers".
During the general election campaign period, the opposition leader had claimed that phantom voters were being flown in and their deployment was coordinated by the Prime Minister's Department.
Blundered again with 'big penis' comment
Meanwhile, there were red faces in front of the monitors broadcasting Najib's speech when the Umno president was misunderstood as having said "big penis" in the Iban language.
"That's very bad! Utai besai means big penis," one East Malaysian remarked.
However, it was later clarified that Najib had cited an Iban proverb "Utai besai gaga'miet" which means “with greater cooperation, the task is easier”.
He said this when thanking Sabah and Sarawak voters for voting BN in 47 parliamentary constituencies. - Mkini
