It is time for UMNO Baru to change its tune.
Since Dr Mahathir Mohamad invented his new brand of UMNO after defeating Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah in the 1987 UMNO elections, things have not changed even a bit.
Even someone who is supposedly more progressive as Khairy Jamaluddin is making remarks about non-Bumiputra companies not giving opportunities to the Malays.
Khairy has not based his own observations on any statistics, but something like this that is being spoken off the cuff, can create unnecessary tension between the races especially when certain individuals are thinking that they should be promoted, but are not.
There are many reasons why a person may not be promoted, one of which is the way the management views his or her performance. It is not necessarily because of race discrimination.
Answer these questions
Given that Khairy has made such statement, I would like to ask Khairy the following questions:
(a) Who is the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and who is his deputy? Why only Malays are holding the top two posts, when there are other Bumiputra in this country?
(b) How many percent of the government agencies and ministries have a non-Malay as the chief?
(c) If the non-Malays in local public universities have been given the opportunity to hold senior positions, why is there such a massive exodus of these academics to the private sector, and some have even migrated overseas? And why so many non-Malays who are highly qualified are not making a comeback to the local public universities?
(d) Tun Daim Zainuddin owns a number of banks in Africa. Why is it that he does not employ any Malays to manage his banks in these countries? I am not sure if he does now, but five years ago, as I understand it, he prefers to employ a Malaysian Chinese or an Indian national to manage his bank in Mozambique.
(e) Why is it that major multinational corporations are more likely to hire a local Malaysian Chinese to manage their outlet in China, than to employ a local Chinese national? Is this not all about trust that can only be built over time?
(f) When I called up the Kuala Lumpur Traffic department to raise a complaint about an investigating officer, why was this question asked by one of the chiefs with the rank of DCP: “What is your race?”
Out of sync with new politics: KJ 'progressive' outside, 'racist' inside?
Trying to project himself as being more progressive, Khairy should stop all the talks about race discrimination. I like Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah’s statement recently that on all forms, the question about “Race” should be removed. After all, we are all Malaysians.
Race politics can no longer be tolerated in Malaysia. It is either our politicians have to be replaced en bloc if they continue to play such gutter politics, or they change and dance to a different tune.
They should learn to work in harmony with their fellow Malaysians, instead of stirring up more racial sentiments or making racist remarks, and stop telling me that May 13 was a racial riot, when the whole country was peaceful except for Selangor and Penang where UMNO lost!
Fifty seven years after Independence, and we are still fighting over race, what a shame!
